Kazemattenmuseum
Experience the impressive story of over 225 Dutch soldiers who managed to hold back a German force of 17,000 in May 1940. Using modern and interactive techniques, the story is told from the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the battle in the May days of 1940, the occupation period 40-45, the liberation by the Canadians to the Cold War.
The special thing about the Kazemattenmuseum is that both the buildings (the 17 heavy casemates, the guardrooms and the German bunker), as well as the stories and exhibits, make up the museum. And all this in a unique location, on the coast, on the dividing line between the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. In addition to the story of the May Days of 1940, visitors to the museum discover much about the Afsluitdijk, life in the casemates, the resistance in the area, the liberation and the Cold War, among other things.
After visiting the museum, you can have a drink on the terrace. From this terrace you have a view of Kornwerderzand, the Afsluitdijk and the IJsselmeer.
